In this sponsored session, Billy Carlson, a Design Educator from Balsamiq, will walk through how to use low fidelity designs combined with storytelling to convince product leadership to green light your next big product or feature idea.

Building on his seminal Enterprise UX 2016 keynote, Greg Petroff will revisit the meta-trends facing the product development community, and their implications for User Experience practitioners.

Theme One – Systems Thinking

What does it mean to bring a “systems” lens to a complex problem within the enterprise? How can designerly tools and methods help turn “systems thinking” into a natural way of thinking for all? We’ll explore the relationship among systems, services, and experiences that senior designers, researchers, and writers should tap into towards achieving their goals.

We’ll explore the relationship among systems, services, and experiences that senior designers, researchers, and writers should tap into towards achieving their goals.

Many designers are recognizing the limitations of the design thinking process and acknowledge the need for systems thinking. In this talk, the audience will learn key concepts of systems thinking, as well as prompts that help them get started on their systems thinking journey. Sheryl will share frameworks that designers can take action with in order to incorporate systems thinking in their day-to-day decision-making.

Design systems are essential for creating cohesive and scalable products. By providing a shared set of design guidelines, components, and styles, design systems help ensure consistency and efficiency throughout the design process. In this talk we’ll go through the best practices when creating and maintaining a Design System including different strategies, approaches to token creation, making good use of overrides, setting up principles and guidelines and how to scale a design system so that it becomes useful for design a dev teams alike.

In this talk, Boon will share learnings from understanding systems thinking at a deeper level, and how this has shaped and improved his approaches to large, messy problem spaces as an senior individual contributor working on product / service design and strategy in the enterprise.

Boon’s perspectives on systems draw from a mix of systems perspectives, which include Checkland’s soft-systems methodology, Capra’s systems view of life, and Ricigliano’s Systems Practice approaches. He’ll also share some of the practicalities and challenges of learning and applying systems thinking (which hasn’t been simple), while having to deliver on UX outcomes at the same time.

When products and services change fundamentally, the practice of Design must change fundamentally, also. What has become of Design in the 21st century, and what is the role of Systems? What does leadership mean and what is innovation, really? Language, conversation, diversity, responsibility, ethics, experimentation are in the necessary mix for today’s organizations.

Right Thing? Designed Right? Built Right? How do you know it’s designed right?

The answer: Effective design planning and management. Our session introduces a design planning and management tool and discusses how it can empower enterprise teams with clarity and data at every altitude, so you know you are designing the right thing right. Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at design information management and tooling that will help you execute UX at scale.

Theme Two – Information Architecture and Knowledge Management

An enterprise’s information is vast, messy, and frustratingly distributed across silos, geographies, and other contexts. How can practices like IA and KM help users find, make sense of, and learn from the content they need? And how can they help UX people and information managers develop and maintain enterprise information environments in a sustainable fashion?

How can practices like IA and KM help users find, make sense of, and learn from the content they need? And how can they help UX people and information managers develop and maintain enterprise information environments in a sustainable fashion?

As designers we want to reach people’s experiences, make their lives better, and ultimately contribute to a better condition of humanity and our planet. But something is getting in our way. Instead of delivering breakthrough experiences we are relegated to feeding bits into downstream implementation and operations. The enterprises we work for make us chase arbitrary, short sighted goals, and chase after the next release. Meanwhile, the key business decisions that determine the outcomes of our efforts have already been made.

Enterprises are made of individuals forming great teams, applying a diverse set of skills, knowledge and experiences to ambitious projects. In order to bring this enormous potential to fruition, we need one thing: a shared understanding, appreciating each other’s viewpoints and backgrounds, tracing and translating decisions for greater impact on the whole.

Milan will introduce you to EDGY – a language designed to achieve just that, relying on your core skills as experience designers and information architects: understanding enterprises as systems embedded in a wider ecosystem and navigating their multifaceted nature. You’ll take away an approach for co-creating their future working with elements, dynamics and dependencies, and radically increase your impact on the outcomes they produce for people.

Over the past 10 years, there has been an a ground swell of knowledge systems. Knowledge systems stand on the shoulders of information systems…not only delivering information, but delivering that information in the context of the user’s needs. The user experience for these systems has not kept pace with the rapid proliferation of technologies that support knowledge systems (artificial intelligence, machine learning, knowledge graphs).

Let’s take a survey of these the technology and landscape of knowledge systems, and discover strategies and best practices for implementing knowledge systems. You will:

  • Gain an understanding of the different type and purposes of knowledge systems, and their characteristic advantages and disadvantages
  • Discover the needs of users
  • Methods to implement UX strategies for knowledge systems

Enterprise IA problems are rarely caused by tricky information architecture. Instead, people and organizational problems manifest in bad IA. Sarah will share tools you can combine in different ways to help move your individual IA strategy forward.

Theme Three – Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

What are AI and ML actually good for in enterprise settings? Can they help UX practitioners make better design decisions–or divert their time and attention to the tough design challenges best left to humans? Can AI/ML help identify and satisfy latent customer needs and stakeholder priorities? What kind of “relationships” should we have with AI in our work as enterprise UX people?

Over the last several years, artificial intelligence (AI) has permeated the software world––from “smart reply” functionality in email to auto-completed code in developer tools––but it’s only recently that AI has been implemented into creative processes. As AI-driven functionality becomes more common in the design tooling space, questions arise––what is cool? Inspirational? Useful? And what is creepy? Unhelpful? Where is the line?

Online shopping was first premiered in the 1980s, as a way for people who couldn’t shop in-person to easily make purchases. But how far we’ve come! In this talk, Fable’s Accessibility Evangelist Sam Proulx will walk you through some of the key factors to create an online shopping experience that is accessible to everyone. From his perspective as a full time screen reader user, and drawing on Fable’s thousands of hours working with people with disabilities, Sam will highlight how consistency, convenience, confidence, and customizability enable a smooth experience for all users, disabled or not. Let’s bring online shopping back to its accessibility roots!

AI-enabled systems that are responsible and human-centered, will be powerful partners to humans. Making systems that people are willing to be responsible for, and that are trustworthy to those using them enables that partnership. Carol will share guidance for operationalizing the work of making responsible human-centered AI systems based on UX research. She will share methods for UX teams to support bias identification, prevent harm, and support human-machine teaming through design of appropriate evidence of system capabilities and integrity through interaction design. Once these dynamic systems are out in the world, critical oversight activities are needed for AI systems to continue to be effective. This session will introduce each of these complex topics and provide references for further exploration of these exciting issues.

AI-based modeling plays an ever-increasing role in our daily lives. Our personal data and preferences are being used to build models that serve up anything from movie recommendations to medical services with a precision designed to make life decisions easier. But, what happens when those models are not precise enough or are unusable because of incomplete data, incorrect interpretations, or questionable ethics? What’s more, how do we reconcile the dynamic and iterative nature of AI models (which are developed by a few) with the expansive nature of the human experience (which is defined by many) so that we optimize and scale UX for AI applications equitably?

This talk will push our understanding of the sociotechnical systems that surround AI technologies, including those developing the models (i.e., model creators) and those for whom the models are created (i.e., model customers). What considerations should we keep top of mind? How might the research practice evolve to help us critique and deliver inclusive and responsible AI systems?

Theme Four – Designing with Data

How might UX people harness the power of Big Data to make design decisions with confidence? Can Big Data compliment our storytelling powers and extend our impact—or will it replace us? And what role and value does the data generated by qualitative research play in scaling UX in enterprises?

Designers stand at the verge of a great professional opportunity: artificial intelligence. This technology enables computers to study the world and make predictions using unstructured data. We can speak to machines—and machines can speak back. We can gesture to devices, expressing emotion and intent, and machines can respond meaningfully. We can look to computers not just for interaction, but for companionship. How can designers adapt and thrive in this evolving terrain? How might we map out new brands, platforms and experiences between human and machine? What dangers must we address? What destructive ideologies must we reveal? What possibilities for a better future might we explore and prototype?

As a product designer, do you trust data when it defies your intuition? What about those times when following data leads you astray? How can you balance the need for experimentation and iteration with the dangers of over-optimization? What are some of the ways that being “data driven” can go wrong? Follow along and learn about the Amplitude design team’s journey blending qualitative and quantitative research to drive design strategy—while balancing quality and velocity.

Mastercard is in the middle of a shift in how decisions are made throughout the product development lifecycle, with data-informed design at the center. A suite of measurements have been developed to quantify the quality of products and the resulting experiences at points across the product lifecycle, so teams can have customer-centric conversations about opportunities and risks. Hear more about these CX Metrics and how we’ve infused them into the product development lifecycle to exert influence across dozens of products across the company.

You’ve seen it happen repeatedly throughout your career. As a UX researcher you’ve taken the time to develop key insights, as a UX designer you’ve conceptualized and tested several hypotheses. As a design strategist you’ve created a vision for a new or existing product and yet; product roadmaps remain eerily empty of your team’s UX contriubutions. How do you take what you know and have learned at this summit and put it into practice at your companies? How do you get your stakeholders on board to not only listen but implement your recommendations? What strategies do you need to make engineering friends and influence product managers? This talk will showcase various tactics you can use to help turn the passionate UX work you do into real product roadmap influence.
