Carol Smith
Sr. Research Scientist, Human-Machine Interaction, AI Division Software, Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University

Carol Smith’s career spans 20+ years exploring complex contexts through UX research and evaluation studies. Since 2015 she has led research to integrate ethics and to improve human experiences with artificial intelligence (AI) systems and other emerging technologies. Carol currently leads research defining human-centered and responsible AI development practices for the AI Division of the Software Engineering Institute at CMU and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses for the CMU HCII. Carol is an active volunteer in the UX community and an ACM Distinguished Speaker. Carol has an M.S. in HCI from DePaul University.
