A Rosenfeld Community interest group
The Advancing Research interest group is a home for researchers who want to move beyond discussing the basics of UX/user research. We offer a place to talk and network in Slack, and frequent and highly engaging presentations and panels (all available as recordings) that you can participate in. Examples of past sessions include Advice for Establishing Research and Age and Interfaces. Sam Ladner, Dave Hora, and Amy Santee are just a few people who’ve led our sessions.
Topics we address include:
- Research as a strategic player
- Collaboration with peer functions (design, engineering, data science, market research)
- Inclusive research
- Research operations
- Research tooling (e.g., repositories, AI)
- The impacts of research democratization, and working with/supporting PWDR (People Who Do Research)
Our curators are Chris Geison and Jem Ahmed. Past curators include Abby Covert, Jamika Burge, Natalie Hanson, and Steve Portigal.

Meet our Advancing Research curators
Jemma Ahmed joined Bumble in 2019. She is Head of Insights based in the London office. She leads the team who regularly speak to online daters all over the world, uncovering the very unique needs and motivations of this group- across brands as diverse as Bumble and Badoo.
Jemma has spent more than 15 years working in mixed methodology insight roles, across user research, market research and data analytics. This includes working in insight for Global news at the BBC, and in insight leadership positions at Etsy, the online markets for unique and handmade goods.
Jemma holds an MA in Law from Cambridge University.
Chris Geison is a Staff Researcher at ServiceNow, where he leads research on skills intelligence and HR technology. He’s also been a researcher at Airtable, Workday, and AnswerLab. Prior to research, Chris had careers in marketing and in behavioral health. Chris holds a BA in English Literature from Brown University. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, their daughter, and an imaginary panther named Winston.
