Katie Swindler: Life and Death Design
What can designers learn from astronauts and race car drivers?
In this episode of the Rosenfeld Review, Lou speaks with Katie Swindler to answer this and similar questions in her upcoming Rosenfeld Media book, Life and Death Design. Katie’s new book will help us redefine how we might view a core human function – specifically, the stress response – and how stress can be an informative tool for designers.
As an experienced presenter who has spoken on UX topics internationally at industry events, Katie believes that brands who wish to truly connect with consumers must expand utility through emotion. She illustrates how leveraging stress-informed design enables users to perform optimally during high-stress or traumatic experiences.

Putting together a product as designers is a challenge on its own. But what happens when you take ethics, privacy, and data into account? What is the extent of the slippery slope about asking for and storing data?
It’s understandable the key stakeholders need to keep an eye on the KPIs and factor data in when evaluating designs. However, should any ethical dilemmas be considered when gathering such data? Learnings from Applying Trauma-Informed Principles to the Research Process
The last two years of crises demonstrate why researchers and designers must anticipate and plan for trauma as it emerges in our work (and our lives). But how do you move your practice and your organization in a trauma-informed direction? This panel will draw upon our experiences researching sensitive topics and working with marginalized communities to discuss implementing trauma-informed practices in research and design engagements. We will explore the different ways we’ve used trauma-informed concepts to work with, and protect the mental and emotional safety of, the communities we serve. Panelists will also discuss self and team care and ways we’ve advocated for trauma-informed approaches in organizations like Code for America and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Drawing inspiration from the conference themes, share your ideas, new learnings, and expertise during a virtual unconference session. The rules are simple:

Operationalizing Responsible, Human-Centered AI
AI-enabled systems that are responsible and human-centered, will be powerful partners to humans. Making systems that people are willing to be responsible for, and that are trustworthy to those using them enables that partnership. Carol will share guidance for operationalizing the work of making responsible human-centered AI systems based on UX research. She will share methods for UX teams to support bias identification, prevent harm, and support human-machine teaming through design of appropriate evidence of system capabilities and integrity through interaction design. Once these dynamic systems are out in the world, critical oversight activities are needed for AI systems to continue to be effective. This session will introduce each of these complex topics and provide references for further exploration of these exciting issues.
