Practical Approaches to Systems Thinking for Designers

Sheryl Cababa’s workshop will arm you with practical tools to use systems thinking concepts and strategically shape your design approach. Through a series of hands-on activities facilitated across break-out groups, you will:

  • Learn how to unpack the status quo
  • Identify the root causes of systems at play
  • Create a dialogue around applying these frameworks across scenarios

By the end of this workshop, you will be enabled to reach and respond to uncertainty in ways you may not have anticipated. The workshop will be led by Sheryl Cababa, Chief Strategy Officer at design consultancy Optimistic Design and author of the Rosenfeld book Closing the Loop.

You’ll explore

  • The intersection of systems thinking and design thinking
  • The structure of engaging in systems thinking
  • Systems thinking and design frameworks
  • Use cases for engaging in systems thinking through design

Exercises

Using case studies, you will be divided into groups to work through a series of scenarios within two parts of the workshop:

  1. Unpacking the status quo and root cause
  2. Imagining futures

Through a series of prompts, each group will collaborate using the system thinking framework introduced to address problems within the provided scenarios. To conclude the session, all groups will reconvene to discuss their learnings and create a dialogue around how to implement these frameworks within your own organization or team.

Takeaways

You will leave the workshop with:

  • A series of tools and frameworks to tangibly engage in systems thinking in your design work
  • Practical approaches to apply systems thinking to complex design challenges
  • Strategies for addressing uncertainty in design processes

Requirements for attending

Familiarity with design thinking concepts is recommended but not required.

Who should attend

This workshop is ideal for design practitioners of all levels, particularly those working on complex products and problem spaces. You will benefit from this workshop if you’re looking to enhance your strategic design approach and tackle complex design challenges more effectively.
