Katherine Spivey is a content and plain language leader and strategist. She started her plain language career in middle school, editing her father’s boss’s writing. Since then, she’s combined writing and editing, web/digital content, and plain language into a rewarding, internationally recognized career. She’s been web/digital content manager at the International Association of Chiefs of Police, at international law firm Steptoe & Johnson LLP, and at two federal government agencies.
For the past few years she’s served as senior communications specialist for the General Services Administration and co-chair of the federal Plain Language Action and Information Network (PLAIN). She’s spoken at several international plain language conferences, given a lightning talk at Confab, and convened meetings and summits for PLAIN.
With an M.A. from the University of Virginia and a B.A. from the University of Mary Washington, she has taught plain language and writing/editing at federal agencies, community colleges, and the Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia.
Outside of work, you can find Katherine reading her ever-expanding TBR pile, writing for NaNoWriMo, traveling, and wishing her house could remodel itself.
