2 day virtual workshop
December 7-8 2023, 8:00am-12:00pm PT
Sheryl Cababa, author of Closing the Loop: Systems Thinking for Designers, will arm attendees with practical tools for how to use systems thinking concepts to strategically shape their design approach. Through a series of hands-on activities facilitated across break-out groups, Sheryl will introduce system thinking concepts about how to unpack the status quo, identify the root-cause of systems at play, and create a dialogue around how to apply these frameworks across scenarios. The outcome of this workshop will enable attendees with how to reach and respond to uncertainty in ways that they did not anticipate.
The workshop will cover the following topics: the intersection of systems thinking and design thinking, the structure of engaging in systems thinking, systems thinking and design frameworks, use cases for engaging in systems thinking through design.
Activities
Using case studies, participants will be broken out into groups to work through a series of scenarios within two parts of the workshop: 1.) Unpacking the status quo and root cause 2.) Imagining futures. Through a series of prompts, each group will work together using the system thinking framework they’ve been introduced to, to address the problems within the scenarios provided. To wrap the session, all groups will come together to discuss their learnings and create a dialogue around how they imagine using these frameworks within their own organization or team.
Takeaways
The audience will leave the workshop with a series of tools and frameworks that help them tangibly engage in systems thinking in their design work. Some of the frameworks are accessible enough for designers to bring back to their team the very next day!
Prerequisites
Familiarity with design thinking concepts is recommended but not required.
