Theme 1: Reconceiving the Purpose of Research

Today we’ll explore the profound transformation in UX research, emphasizing collaboration, equity, and networked knowledge creation across various sessions. Our presenters will address such topics as shifting dynamics between researchers and participants, redefining truth and inclusivity, democratization of research, expanding roles of ResearchOps, strategies for integrating knowledge across research functions, coexisting with AI, and embracing change with compassion and agency.

Shifting dynamics among researchers, participants, and organizational systems are creating a profound transformation in research methods, impact, and function. At its heart this shift encompasses five core tenets, which emphasize collaboration, equity, and networked knowledge creation and curation. This talk will provide an overview of these changes, which will be explored in depth during the conference, and how our field can prepare.

Trust in traditional expertise is waning, while collaborative, networked models of knowledge creation and impact are emerging. Focus is shifting toward inclusivity and equity, as a reimagined relationship between researchers, participants, and organizations emerges. These changes in turn reflect broader cultural shifts. This session explores the context and drivers of these evolutions, highlighting the most significant changes in research for a generation that researchers need to prepare for.

Our understanding of truth is being reshaped. This challenge deepens when considering how truth intersects with shifting views on data ownership, knowledge extraction, and inclusivity. Researchers must respect participants’ ownership of their narratives and foster intersectional inclusivity to uncover more equitable truths. This discussion explores practical strategies for understanding what equitable truth means in a world of disinformation, where both participants and researchers are increasingly questioning the meaning of true inclusivity in our field.

Businesses are increasingly demanding that insight functions—market research, CX, data science, and user research—collaborate to consolidate knowledge and avoid duplicating work or telling conflicting stories. As a result, researchers are shifting from knowledge generation to insight curation. However, there is no one-size-fits-all model. In this session, leaders from diverse disciplines will explain why curation is essential, share practical structures and strategies for knowledge sharing, and offer actionable steps to drive effective, integrated insight within organizations.

As culture and technology evolve, researchers must learn to co-exist with AI. Understanding its benefits, limitations, and ethical challenges is essential. This guide offers practical insights on top AI tools, advice on when and how to integrate AI into workflows, and a balanced view of the good, the bad and the ugly of the current AI landscape.

Research democratization is here to stay, with both researchers and people who do research contributing to knowledge creation. This session explores effective collaboration models and roles—curation, co-creation, and generation. It examines necessary boundaries and offers practical strategies for managing democratization, regaining agency, and ensuring shared power that strengthens the whole, rather than diminishing individual contributions.

The future of ResearchOps must expand beyond its current role to integrate more strategic functions within the research ecosystem. By broadening ResOps, we can enhance efficiency, foster collaboration, and enable more data-driven decisions. In the short term, we can prioritize cross-functional training and streamlined processes. Long-term, investing in advanced technologies and fostering a culture of continuous improvement will be key to realizing this expanded vision for research operations.

On the second day of Advancing Research 2025, we’ll explore the expansion of research methodologies in response to industry shifts, emphasizing the need for integrative thinking, non-extractive approaches, and advanced techniques to generate novel insights and increase influence. We’ll discuss various methods, including advanced quantitative techniques, meta-analysis, behavioral science integration, experimental research, cultural insight techniques, participatory research, group interviews, and international research, all aimed at unlocking deeper truths and driving innovation in the changing landscape of user research.

Environmental shifts, both in the world around us and in the attitudes within our field, have reshaped how we view truth, expertise, and the power dynamics between researchers and communities. Researchers must recognize that generating and curating knowledge today requires an expanded set of methodologies—embracing integrative thinking and non-extractive approaches. This session will explore the catalysts for change, and introduce a broadened user research toolkit that enables ethical knowledge creation and challenges traditional power imbalances, helping us thrive in this new landscape.

The conference’s third day explores the operational implications of shifting dynamics between researchers, participants, and organizations, focusing on redefining insight communication, driving change within evolving systems, and rethinking team structures and career paths. Speakers will adress topics such as transforming insights into wisdom, balancing impactful communication with compassionate storytelling, amplifying researchers’ voices, positioning insight teams for success, understanding the power to heal and harm in research, and empowering change to reignite purpose and impact in the field.

Research is at an inflection point: day 3 of our conference will explore what the shifts in dynamics between researchers, participants, and organizations means at an operational level. We’ll discuss how to define and communicate insights, drive change within evolving relational systems, and rethink team structures, career paths, and researcher learning. Additionally, we’ll explore how to balance healing and social good while minimizing harm in commercial systems to help researchers chart a course between profit and purpose.

Organizations are organic, evolving systems with complex relational dynamics and power structures, both within the system and among its people. These systems are being reshaped by shifts in culture and technology, just as the research function and methodologies are. As researchers take on a more powerful, holistic role as knowledge curators, we must rethink how we communicate and navigate these complexities to drive meaningful change. By considering these changed relational dynamics, we will explore how researchers can center themselves to transform insights into received wisdom that has the power to shape and influence organizational systems at scale.

By encouraging researchers to view their deliverables as more than just insights, we will provide you with practical strategies for transforming data into truth and wisdom. In doing so, we must challenge the notion of “”bringing truth to power,”” exploring its meaning in a more equitable, relational context. We will examine the characteristics of truth and wisdom and offer techniques to share this wisdom within organizations in ways that are impactful, equitable, and non-hierarchical, reflecting the evolving nature of truth and relational dynamics.

Many research professionals are feeling disillusioned due to layoffs, market shifts, and the prioritization of profit over people. Coupled with rapid changes in the field, shifting skill demands, and instances of mistreatment, the current context feels challenging. Despite the ethical imperatives that initially drew them to research, many feel their work lacks agency and purpose. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. Our industry is at an inflection point, and the organizational and cultural systems we operate within can be influenced. This session with changemaker Maria Giudice explores how to regain agency, drive change, and balance profit with purpose to reignite a sense of impact, dignity, and value in our work.
